Toledo Jones sat with his back turned to his desk, staring out at the vast night skyline of Neon City. He looked at the city below with bloodshot eyes that remained fixed on the middle distance. He looked into a world filled with regret, remorse and the dark questions of existence we are told not to ask ourselves. Especially late at night, when we are alone on the 57th floor of a public super skyscraper.
Toledo rubbed his throbbing temples with his shaking fingertips. His fingers running up against the elastic band of his virtual reality headset. In a flurry, he ripped the viewer off and flung it to the corner of his office. It landed on the second hand sofa he’s been using for a bed. Toledo ran his fingers through his hair and tried to come back to reality.
He inhaled deeply through his nose, trying to use the trick he learned from his relaxation app. With a spin, he turned back to his desk and scavenged for something to drink. Knocking over empty bottles of Happy Juice and stained coffee mugs in the process. When was the last time I left the building, he wondered.
